anti-war films don't exist.
Can a film truly be anti-war? In this video essay I dispute François Truffaut's provocative claim, "There's no such thing as an anti-war film." And dissect this statement by examining iconic films like Come and See, Saving Private Ryan, The Ascent, The Human Condition Trilogy, and Full Metal Jacket. Join me as I unravel the complexities of war cinema and challenge the notion of what it means to be "anti-war."

1983's Barefoot Gen is one of the most harrowing looks at war from the POV of everyday people (non-combatants) I have ever seen. It's also one of the best adaptations of a manga, which was authored by Keiji Nakazawa, a survivor of the Atomic bombings who loosely based what he drew & wrote on what he actually saw or heard from fellow survivors' experiences. To clarify, it's not meant to make Americans feel guilty or villainize the U.S. military for how it ended WW II. It's a story primarily about survival in the aftermath of disaster. But it does show that Hiroshima & Nagasaki were a human tragedy in their own right and NOT something to be celebrated or glorified. It illustrates the brutal realities of what happens when ANYONE resorts to such weapons (justifiably or not) and the cost paid by innocents. It's an unapologetically mature exercise in showing that, no matter who wins or who was right, war is Hell regardless but nuclear war is a Hell all its own.

Do you not think that Full Metal Jacket's succeeds as an anti-war film through the general consensus that the second act is weaker than the first? The first act, as you said, has become iconic because it is entertaining, the second act does not satisfy the audience in this way, however, and there is no third act; this leaves the audience un-entertained, and unsatisfied...trapped in the second act trying to figure something out from it, to find a reason for it...

My personnal advise for true anti war films would be "Wooden Crosses" ( Les croix de bois) I don't know if you can find it in english because it's a french black and white film from 1932 ( you can find it in DVD). This movie about World War One was written and directed by a veteran, the actors were veterans, and the movie was shot on real battlefields and sites from World War One. It's the best depiction of one of the worst wars in human histor I have seen so fary. One of the actors said during the "shooting" of te film "We didn't hav to play, we jut remembered". What is truely amazing about this film is the absolute lack of story. You just follow a company of soldiers from the trenches, to the rear, and back to the trenches again and again. There is no scenario because they don't really know what they are doing and especially WHY. There is no true objective or great battle, they are juste here, being killed one after another, with the death being so frequent they don't seem to matter in there eyes anymore. There's the constant sound of bombardments, and the screams of the wounded in the no man's land. Not as a short and shocking depiction lasting a few seconds, but a constant rear sound of death who is here as long as the soldiers are in the trenches. SPOILER: At the end the main character is wounded and screams for help for some very long minutes stuck between two trenches to finally die alone after a long agony. And that's how the movie ends, no sad music or anything, just the little voice of a young wounded soldier asking for help and only silence answering.

I can appreciate where you’re coming from with your criteria, but I mildly disagree purely because Paths of Glory must qualify, in my opinion. I think if the film attacks the ideology behind war it is more effectively antiwar. Saving Private Ryan, the new All Quiet on the Western Front, etc. are way too visually indulgent, as in they focus on making it an exhilarating experience for the audience. They invite you to choose the good and bad guys. To be antiWAR means simply to tell the truth that there are no winners. But i agree with you that it is necessary to make this statement in full by encompassing the entire scale of everyone victimized.

This movie marked me. As a mother, I was especially shaken towards the end of the movie that the new generation of children is not schooled so they speak a patois of their own and are impulsive and violent. The scene where one of the boys forces himself onto the illiterate girl horrified me. The boys basically became Somali refugees in Sweden!

My nephew wanted to enlist to combat arms because he wants to “really live call of duty” I told him if call of duty destroyed your video game console and tv and banned you forever when you died the first time I could see that being reality. Or if when you first log on your screen goes black and later they send a letter to your parents about an artillery attack or a plane crash

The horror podcast The Magnus archives has a number of episodes that don’t quite meet your criteria, but still have sort of an anti-war theme to them. Without going into too many spoilers, there are some monstrous beings that feed on specifically the fear and horror caused by war, including one simply known as “The Piper.” I highly recommend checking out the series, it’s some of the best horror fiction I’ve ever heard.

One thing people often forget is that most of war is marching around or sitting in position, being tired, bored, sick, scared, or all of the above. Actual combat is often pretty rare.

You glossed over that tragedy is very cathartic. As such, someone who believes in the necessity of war or even someone who might view it as potentially noble might still see a movie about the pointlessness of it all and have their mind remain unchanged.

Something that I think has been largely missing from war movies is the distinct view from the perspective of the veteran. It's easy enough to consult and insure film accuracy, but I think until a piece is written/produced specifically by a pragmatic combat vet, the anti-war film will remain more art than real life. War docs like "Combat Obscura", I think, capture this well, as well as more personalized dramatizations like "Generation Kill" - but they're the rare exception which painstakingly approached war from the perspective of the average enlisted man. GK in particular captures a lot of the chaos and moral ambiguity of the early GWOT years and the cognitive dissonance of how many vets of that war felt about OEF/OIF.

i haven't seen this but did they add anything unique or interesting to the original formula? from the trailers and what i've heard it's basically just an ok remake of the original, i see no reason to watch it when i could rewatch alien, nor a reason why this film needed to be an alien sequel instead of doing its own thing. the only good sequel was the second one, regardless of whether you like aliens they significantly changed the formula and gave ripley an amazing character arc

I totally understand trying to write an extremely dark story and giving up on it because it takes a huge mental tole on one's self. No matter how much we would like to think otherwise, the creator sometimes values themself over a masterpiece.

I disagree with your criteria for anti-war films. I think that what that sentence means, "there are no anti-war films" is more than just talking about the spectacle of the war itself. Movies are made for entertainment so even those that make us feel terror, disgust or sadness, are voluntary positions in which we put ourselves to enjoy the art. Basically, an anti-war movie would need to be devoid of any entertainment value because, unless we are all psychopaths that do find enjoyment in real war, I cannot fathom how could you express the feeling of being in a battlefield without making the viewer invested in the film.
